These pages will attempt to expunge the
myth that surrounds hoaxes. It isn't a page about individual hoaxes because there are
much better available. Having read these pages, you will be better
able to spot a hoax and therefore avoid
the embarrassment or chastisement of your friends and colleagues
resulting from blindly following instructions
contained in a seemingly plausible email.
There are
usually three tell-tale clues to a hoax circulation:
- It implores you to send it to absolutely everyone
in your address book immediately
- It purports to be the breaking news, before
BBC,
ITV or
CNN
- It is allegedly leaked from a huge, well-known
corporation like
Microsoft,
AOL,
IBM or similar
Now that you realise that you've seen several things that could have
been hoaxes, let's expand on these points
